Apple Cider Vinegar…Why all the Hype?


For so long, I’ve heard and read many positive things about apple cider vinegar (ACV) and the effects it’s had on people’s health. I’ll admit, I was a sceptic, but intrigued. After lots of research and tests on myself, ACV has become a staple in my pantry and diet.

When I started doing research on ACV, I found an overwhelming amount of information. There are many benefits, some even supported by science! It has been shown to aid in weight loss and improve blood sugar control and immunity, just to name a few.

Over the past few years, I started to develop digestion issues, like many people do as they get older. I tried everything under the sun to alleviate symptoms; countless over-the-counter probiotics, digestive teas, kombucha, etc. and nothing seemed to work. When I decided to give ACV a try, I started to feel better within days. I’ve had a lot less bloating and discomfort, not to mention I rarely ever get seasonal colds!

In no particular order, here are my favorite 5 health benefits of ACV:

#1. Helps control blood sugar: ACV has been shown to have a powerful effect on regulating blood sugar levels. Having a stable blood sugar plays an essential role in weight loss and reducing the chance of developing chronic diseases like diabetes. Consuming a lot of starchy and sugary foods like white bread and sweets, will cause a spike and crash in blood sugar resulting in a fat storage response, reduced energy levels and increased cravings for more starchy, sugary foods. Incorporating ACV into your daily routine can help reduce the chance of these blood sugar imbalances.

#2. Aids in weight loss: Since ACV helps control blood sugar, it will reduce cravings of sugary foods which could help you lose weight. Some studies found that the acetic acid in ACV can also increase satiety, boost your metabolism and reduces water retention (bloating).

#3. Supports digestion: This one is my favorite! Supplementing ACV before meals can help improve digestion. It provides helpful digestive enzymes for those who do not produce enough on their own. ACV also contains healthy acids that control the growth of unwanted substances in the stomach and body.

#4 & 5. Boosts immunity & improves energy: ACV can keep your body’s PH balanced. The acetic acid balances your PH levels to help keep your body alkaline which can improve immune function AND increase energy levels.

It’s important that you purchase organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Unlike the regular stuff, it contains those beneficial ingredients like enzymes and proteins. Common, safe dosages range between 2 teaspoons to 2 tablespoons per day.

Ways to incorporate ACV into your diet:
o Pair with olive oil and enjoy as a salad dressing
o Add to herbal tea with lemon juice and a drizzle of honey
o Take a shot!


^My favorite “shot” I take every day before breakfast: 2 tablespoons ACV plus ½ teaspoon baking soda. Mix it up, let it sit for a minute, take it like a shot and chase with it juice or smoothie.
